Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the new governor of the RBI, following the resignation of Urjit Patel. Das is the 25th governor of the central bank and will be the governor for a period of three years.
He was the economic affairs secretary from 2015-2017, the period during which the government implemented demonetisation. According to a report by the Times of India, Das might take charge as RBI governor in a day or two.
Das, who joined the IAS in 1980 resigned as a member of the 15th FC (Finance Commission) following his appointment.
He will be tasked with improving the relationship between the central bank and the government. Given that Urjit Patel resigned before the board meeting scheduled for 14th December, Das will also be given the responsibility of presiding over this meet.
