According to the interim Finance Minister, Mr. Piyush Goyal, the government is likely to allocate more funds for the Ayushman Bharat scheme next year. Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, also known as Ayushman Bharat, was launched by the government about four months ago. It is touted to be the world’s largest government-sponsored health insurance scheme.
The interim FM revealed this information in his speech at the Sixth Global Fund Replenishment organised by the Ministry of Health.
During the event, Mr. Goyal noted that this ambitious scheme of the Central Government has already benefited more than 10 lakh people in the country. He added that the government has already invested more than half a billion dollars for this scheme and funding is likely to increase for next year.
For the fiscal year 2019-2020, the government has allocated Rs.6,400 crore to provide health insurance coverage for eligible members of Aysuhman Bharat scheme. This was announced during the interim Budget presented by the Central Government last week.
The scheme aims to provide coverage to 50 crore Indian citizens belonging to nearly 10 crore families. The main beneficiaries of this scheme will be people belonging to the low-income segment. It provides Rs.5 lakh worth of coverage per family, and it will be utilised on a family floater basis.
In his speech, Mr. Goyal also spoke about the need to take a holistic approach to healthcare. He noted that it is necessary to create a distress-free healthcare system for the citizens of the country. Unless this approach is maintained, it will be difficult for the lesser privileged to access healthcare.
Additionally, the development of healthcare infrastructure is a major thing that the government is focusing on now. By improving the healthcare infrastructure, it will be possible to open up huge opportunities for various companies in the world.
