Flipkart has expanded their business to include travel services by partnering with India’s most popular online travel company, MakeMyTrip. The partnership between the two online platforms will allow Flipkart to sell travel services.
MakeMyTrip is one of India’s leading online travel agencies and Flipkart is one of India’s biggest online retail company. This partnership means all of MakeMyTrip’s brands such as RedBus and Goibibo would gain access to Flipkart’s customer base. The strategic partnership between these two companies seeks to drive online bookings in the travel sector.
According to Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, MakeMyTrip and Flipkart have shaped the consumer internet ecosystem in India, and the partnership will provide users with a seamless experience when it comes to making travel bookings on the e-commerce platform. Additionally, it will also further Flipkart’s goal of becoming a one-stop website for all online transactions. Deep Kurla, founder and CEO of MakeMyTrip, added that the partnership will help accelerate a tremendous online travel opportunity in India by further widening their customer base.
The service is likely to be launched in the next few days with domestic flights being the first type of service to go live. Sources have stated that other travel features of MakeMyTrip such as buses, trains, hotels and holiday packages are likely to be introduced gradually.
Flipkart board member and MakeMyTrip chief executive Rajesh Magow stated that the two companies have been looking to work together for some time now. India’s most popular online retailer has been looking to build on the number of services it offers and has gradually increased the scale of its grocery supply section to keep users coming back to the platform more often.
Reports of a partnership between the two companies initially made the rounds in the last week of March, when speculations were made about the e-commerce giant providing travel services.
