A recent statistic that has been revealed by an NDTV report is likely to bring delight to the country’s Income Tax department. As per the report, e-filing of income tax returns by salaried individuals has increased by 54%, which is a significant jump from the last year’s statistics. According to the Income Tax Department, as of 31 August 2018, 3.37 crore salaried individuals filed their taxes online as compared to 2.19 crore salaried individuals the previous year – a 54% increase.
Overall, the Income Tax Department reported that there has been a 70.86% increase of the number of people e-filing their returns. On 31 August 2018, the number of people that e-filed their returns was 5.42 crore, in comparison to 3.17 crore e-filings the previous year.
For e-filing of presumptive tax, the IT Department said that they received 1.17 crore e-filings, against 14.93 lakh exactly a year ago. Though the IT Department urged taxpayers not to file their taxes last minute, on 31 August 2018 – the deadline, 34.95 lakh return e-filing were carried out by taxpayers on the date of the deadline. Of course, the drastic increase in the e-filing numbers can be partly attributed to the fact that the procedure has been made smoother since it has been shifted online.
